The Basque Country (Euskadi in the Basque language) is a model of sustainability and cultural, social, and economic transformation. The political, cultural, and urban planning actions carried out in its three capitals—Bilbao, San Sebastián, and Vitoria—have contributed to the transition from an industrial model to genuine service-oriented cities, where livability, culture, ecology, and sustainability are at the core of deep reflection.

The city of Vitoria was named Green Capital by the European Commission in 2012. San Sebastián was European Capital of Culture in 2016 and, in the same year, was also awarded Best European City by the prestigious Academy of Urbanism in Cambridge. Bilbao received the Best European City award at The Urbanism Awards 2018 and is also home to one of the European locations of the Guggenheim Museum.

Ensemble Kuraia offers a musical vision of these transformations through a program featuring composers from the three regions that make up Euskadi: Biscay, Gipuzkoa, and Álava. The performed works and meetings with the composers will offer a captivating musical landscape.

6:00 p.m. Traditional

Villa Minozzo: Teatro dei Mantellini

Ensemble Cameristico Variabile Sergio Gaggia (Italy)

La Pantomima Rinata

Scenic-musical reconstruction of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Faschingspantomime, KV 446

  • Musical score reconstructed by Vladimir Mendelssohn

  • Libretto adapted and transformed into a dramatic text by Quirino Principe

  • Stage realization by “Teatrino del Rifo”

  • Commissioned and produced by the ASSOCIAZIONE SERGIO GAGGIA of Cividale del Friuli for the Mozart commemorations of 2006

Performers:
Marta Riservato, Manuel Buttus, Maurizio Zacchigna – actors
Ensemble Cameristico Variabile Sergio Gaggia
Andrea Rucli – piano
Quartetto d’archi Grazer Musiker

This precious reconstruction brings back one of the most curious and distinctive incomplete scores in the Mozart catalog. Composed for the Carnival of 1783, the Musik zu einer Faschingspantomime is a playful game of masks, deeply rooted in the commedia dell’arte tradition. Mozart contributed not only as a composer but also as a dramatist, even stepping into the role of Harlequin for the “Compagnie Mascarade,” a family troupe formed for the occasion.

9:00 p.m. Ecological

Tiziano Fratus in conversation with Emanuele Ferrari

10:00 p.m. Ecological / Experimental

Busana: Parco Canevari

Ensemble FlashBack (France) / Icarus Ensemble / Thomas Köppel (Switzerland)

Tiziano Fratus

During travels across Europe, America, and the Far East, Tiziano Fratus coined the concepts of “rooted man/woman,” “dendrosofia,” and “alberography,” which inspired a series of works related to nature, identity, and monumental trees, first published in 2010 with the volume Homo Radix. Notes for a Tree Seeker. His most substantial output is the Trilogy of Monumental Mouths, published by Laterza between 2014 and 2016, followed by the “silvari” series published by Einaudi, Bompiani, Mondadori, Ediciclo, Gribaudo, Piano B, and Feltrinelli.

Late in the evening will feature the world premiere of Ephémères harmonies, a work commissioned by Icarus to the French collective FlashBack from Perpignan. Written for videomapping, flute, guitar, harp, percussion, and electronics, it was composed collaboratively by Alexander Vert (France), José Miguel Fernandez (Chile), and Thomas Köppel (Switzerland), and will be performed by the soloists of Icarus Ensemble.

This piece is dedicated to ecology while maintaining a strong technological impact and low energy consumption, thanks to new technologies recently adopted by Icarus. Real-time electronics and videomapping on the branches of centuries-old chestnut trees—trees that Fratus has written about—will create an immersive outdoor experience. The concert starts at 10:00 p.m. to ensure darkness for the projections.

About Ensemble FlashBack:
Founded in 2012 by Alexander Vert, FlashBack brings together performers, composers, visual artists, and researchers in musical informatics, with the shared ambition to support and promote contemporary music in relation to new technologies (gesture capture, sound/image/gesture interaction, augmented literature, etc.). Oriented toward plural expressions aimed at a broad audience, the ensemble engages in creation, dissemination, research, and development, as well as cultural, mediation, and educational activities at local, national, and international levels.
